Sunny Side Up

Dude, seriously, geek.

Let's get digital, digital, c'mon let's get digital

We just got digital cable, the cable guy left an hour ago. Not that we had any say in the matter, it's either digital cable or back to network TV, which, in our area is flaky. Sometimes the picture or sound would cut out for unexplained reasons.

Our cable provider, Foxtel, the only cable provider in the area, will phase out analog cable sometime next year and from next month, anyone still with analog will be charged $10 extra. The onscreen channel guide for analog disappeared about three months ago, replaced with channel promos.

Digital cable is neat and I can finally watch Discovery Travel & Adven… Living but I hate having to memorize new channel numbers. From simple 2 digits to 3 digits that's nowhere near the old numbers. For example, CNN used to be 36 but now it's 603, Sky News used to be 34 now it's 601, FoxSports and FoxSports 2 from 11 and 12 or 54 and 55 to 502 and 501. CONFUSING!!! There's a certain order to it but it still sucks. The interactive mini info guide at the bottom of the screen is nice though.

The on screen digital channel guide is sort of simple enough to use but unless you're technically minded in the slightest, it can be overwhelming. Regardless, having to use it is very time consuming so I decided to print out the list, 63 TV channels and 30 radio channels. Not radio as in FM but Foxtel's own set of digital radios plus a few news channels from ABC, SBS, BBC and the like.

Plenty of TV.
