Google Talk
THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!! HIDE!! TAKE COVER!! SAVE YOURSELVES!! GOOGLE IS TAKING OVER THE PLANET!!
Wait... I'm on blogger and I use gmail and google maps.
Anyway, Google now has an instant messaging protocol called GoogleTalk. The client is Windows only (boo!) but there's no reason why you can't use it on Macs (yaay!) Just use your favorite chat client (iChat or AdiumX) and follow these instructions:
1. Open Accounts in Preferences
2. Create a new Jabber account
3. User ID = your full gmail address, password = your gmail password
4. Server = talk.google.com
5. Port = 5222 for AdiumX or 5223 for iChat
6. Use TLS encryption (Adium only).
Done.
Anyone you add to your GoogleTalk buddy list will automatically be added to your Gmail address book. Unfortunately audio chat is only supported through GoogleTalk client. If you want audio chat through Macs, you'll need an AIM account (free with 2GB email) and log in through iChat AV.
