Sunny Side Up

Dude, seriously, geek.

Por-table?

So Apple released new 13.3-inch MacBooks with slightly upgraded specs, while HP announced their first 20-inch notebook computer.

Apple's latest lineup isn't terribly exciting, adding slight speed bumps, larger HDs and 802.11 (draft) n wireless networking in a 2.3Kg package, while HP gives you 2 built in HDs totaling 500GB (Whoa!), 512MB graphics card (Yikes!), a huge screen (Yowza!), and a bag of enchiladas weighing closer to a ton (Oof!).

Apple's current lineup of portable computer maxes out at 17" on the MacBook Pro. I'd never consider the 17" an actual portable computer - although my boss would beg to differ - let alone a 20-incher. How big do you want portable computers to be? How much would people tolerate? Has the definition of portable computer dramatically changed in the last 6 years? Has the standard human body size grown 200% since 2001?

Maybe we should put in a new class for those aberrations. Any notebook with screens measuring larger than 16-inches (measured diagon all.. i mean diagonally) should be placed not under the heading of portable computer but for-table computers because they're definitely not laptops. Tabletops? Desktops? What? It's taken? Who? When? Oh wait.

Before these for-table computers grow to multikilogram 24-inch behemoths, would someone please develop portable computers with a high resolution megacolor holographic imaging projector that would fit in a regular backpack if not a standard shirt pocket?
