Moto SUXR
Further to my post script note at the end of this entry I posted on Friday, Macworld managed to get their hands on a MotoROKR for testing.
What the reviewer found about the phone was that it unfortunately doesn't live up to the name. It's not a ROKR, it's a SUXR. It doesn't work with iTunes 5 on both Mac and Windows, it doesn't recognize the phone and the reviewer isn't the only one with the problem. He reported that "People on Appleās own message boards are having the same problem" so it's looking pretty clear that there's a bad connection somewhere between Cupertino, CA* and Schaumburg IL*.
It's still early days (2 in fact!) so I expect this to be fixed real soon.
*Cupertino and Schaumburg being the locations of Apple's and Motorola's headquarters respectively
