Sunny Side Up

As if the December 26 quake and the following tsunami isn't enough, the people of northern Sumatra and its surroundings were given yet another scare last night. Just before midnight local time (about five hours ago), another massive quake hit the same area on the same fault line, measuring 8.7 with a 6.0 aftershock sending residents panicking and fleeing out to higher grounds and alerting all tsunami affected regions to prepare for yet another wave of disaster. Luckily, there's no sign of a repeat of last year's devastating tsunami that struck following a 9.0 quake but reports say dozens of people have been killed in the island of Nias, near the epicenter (200km off the east coast).

Just over 10 days ago there was a warning from seismologists that another quake may hit the region, but how much attention was paid to it is unclear.

Experts from various sources gave conflicting opinions as to whether this was an aftershock of the December 26 quake or a primary quake of its own.
