Sunny Side Up

Dude, seriously, geek.

Let her go already

If you haven't heard about Terry Schiavo (while it may look Italian, apparently it's pronounced Shy-vo - Americans, go fig), where have you been? Here's a CNN article for some info on her case. Read that before you proceed reading this entry.

You done? Good. Amazing that Dubya now thinks that one life is precious when he's been known as the Texecutioner. As the Governor of Texas, he handed down more death sentences than any governor in the United States, ever. Now he wants this woman to stay alive. This woman who prior to falling to her current condition, told her husband that she didn't want to live like how she is now. This woman who has absolutely no chance of regaining any activity as a human being.

What's so special about her that it warranted waking up the entire US Congress in the middle of the night and passing a law to keep her alive before the sun even rises? There have been hundreds of cases like this and none have raised as much interest as this one. Why her? Does it now mean that the Congress can pass laws for individual citizens of the US? Inquiring minds want to know.

she won't starve because her brain is apparently too far gone to tell her she needs food. Isn't euthanasia illegal in the US though?

The way it works in Australia (not sure how it works in the US now that they've passed those new laws) is that a patient (or their guardian) is allowed to refuse any medical treatment... and the law says that parentral feeding (through a nasogastric tube etc...) is a medical treatment.

P.S. She is not going to get any better.

ah, our resident med student :D. That new law will mean nothing if the courts disregard it and the court of appeals has. only one more left now, the federal court.

it's been 15 years, half her brain is liquid. how her parents expect her to recover, to me it's just out of blind hope and love.
